GroupX Spotlight: Body Barre

A way to achieve the balance, strength and flexibility of a ballet dancer is to attend the Body Barre class taught by Amanda. According to Amanda, Body Barre fatigues and sculpts the muscles using light weights while practicing large range of motion movements to elevate the heart rate.

What is your favorite thing about teaching GroupX?

My favorite thing about teaching Body Barre is watching people grow stronger each class. I love celebrating in their accomplishments!

What made you want to teach GroupX?

The staff and students who regularly attend Body Barre have created a community who inspire each other. They are motivating to be around which made me want to become a Group X Barre instructor.  

Employee Spotlight: Becky Van Sloten

Back in August of 2015, Becky began working for the Rec. She is a junior majoring in nursing and is an Intramural Sports Supervisor!

Why did you want to work at the Rec?

The Rec is a fun environment that is a work out, stress relief, social life, and bundle of joy all in one. I saw all the friendships within the coworkers and wanted to be part of it with my best friend – shoutout to Erin.

How did you choose your major?

I chose nursing so that I could help the people that are normally set aside by society, and to build relationships with my patients that will impact them for a lifetime. I chose nursing when I was in Africa four years ago, and never regretted it since…well maybe once haha, but I love nursing!

What is your favorite part about working at the REC?

I love the people. You get paid to have fun. Literally the best job ever.

What transferrable skills have you acquired that will help you in the future?

I’ve learned how to take control of situations, and find the balance between a supervisor and a friend.

What are your favorite Rec activities?

Volleyball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, and if kickboxing doesn’t kill me, it can be on the list too.

When you’re not at the Rec, what are some things you like to do?

I’m in nursing school, so I study. But I also enjoy spending quality laughing sessions with my friends, leading bible studies, and continually learning new things.

What are you looking forward to?

In my future, I think that if I can take a sad situation for someone, and bring joy will put a smile on his or her face, then that is what I will look forward to every day of my career.

What are your plans for the future?

I would find great joy working with children that have cancer along with their families, or becoming a medical missionary.

Employee Spotlight: Gabby Arambula

Gabby has graced the Rec with her brilliant smile and awesome personality since the Fall of 2014!  She is a junior this year and is majoring in WHP and Injury Prevention.  You will find Gabby in the Member Services Department working the front desk!

Why did you want to work at the Rec?

I wanted to get more involved on campus and I loved being active and thought why not give it a shot.

How did you choose your major?

I originally was an Anthropology Criminal Justice major but realized I couldn’t do anything with that, so my friend had recommended WHP and I have liked it ever since!

What is your favorite part about working at the REC?

I love the staff!  Everyone I get to work with is great.  We have a great group of people.

What transferrable skills have you acquired that will help you in the future?

Communication skills and problem solving.  

What are your favorite Rec activities?

GroupX for sure.  I love cycle!  I also participated in a lot of Zumba last semester and the Six Pack Attack class.  Also, I enjoy IM sports and am part of the running club.

When your not at the Rec, what are some things you like to do?

I like to organize, relax, drink coffee, and hang out with my friends.  But to be honest, I am typically working my other job.

How do you stay active and healthy?

I watch what I eat especially because I am lactose intolerant and I stay active by running and strength training. 

What are you looking forward to?

Seeing what I can do with the opportunities that come my way and finishing out the time I have left here on a good note.

Fun Fact: I eat the skin of grapes first before I eat the whole grape. 

Employee Spotlight: Leah Vruggink

Leah Vruggink is a Junior this year and has been working at the Rec in Member Services since the Fall of 2014.  Having always been involved in sports from a young age, she wished to pursue a career in physical therapy with athletes.

Why did you want to work at the Rec?

I came to the Rec often as a freshman and it looked like a fun environment to work in.

I love meeting new people whether it is co-workers or patrons.

What transferrable skills have you acquired that will help you in the future?

Customer service is an acquired skill that will help anyone in any profession, including me!

What are your favorite Rec activities?

IM sports!

When you’re not at the Rec, what are some things you like to do?

I like to play soccer, hangout with my roommates and watch The Office on Netflix.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to go to graduate school and receive my doctorate in Physical Therapy. 

Employee Spotlight: Kyle Andridge

Kyle Andridge has been with the Rec Center since August of 2015 as one of our lifeguards in Aquatics.  He is majoring in Health Science, when he decided to combine his passions for fitness, nutrition and encouraging others to better themselves.

Why did you want to work at the Rec?

I wanted to be a lifeguard for OU.

What is your favorite part about working here?

I have always loved being in the water and the staff at the Rec center has always been helpful and joyful whenever I workout.

Skills I have learned included becoming confident and engaging with others, working with a team and leading people to makes safe choices. 

What are you favorite Rec activities?

Using the fitness center!

When you’re not at the Rec, what are some things you like to do?

I am usually working at another job, studying or in class.  I do enjoy snowboarding, going to main street with friends and biking.  

What are you looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to graduation.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans involve graduate school and then become a PA.

Fun Fact: I have a twin sister in NYC.

 

Employee Spotlight: Autumn Cleverly

Autumn Cleverly has dedicated 7 years of her college career at the Rec Center!  Autumn is the Aquatics Graduate Program Assistant, a Fitness Intern and one of our talented GroupX instructors!  While forming an appreciation for campus recreation after being hired in February of 2010, she is very fortunate to have found her passion at such an early age!  She is a graduate student majoring in Exercise Science, gaining valuable and practical experience at the Rec!

Why did you want to work at the Rec?

I was looking for a fun job that was on campus when I was a freshman.  As an athlete, I was looking for a place that would be flexible around practices.  The Aquatics center was the first to contact me, so I went out and got my certification.

How did you choose your major?

I have a B.S. in biology, but during my sophomore year I realized that I did not want to go into the medical field, but rather work with Athletes.  I started my minor and knew right away that studying exercise is where my heart is! What is your favorite part about working here?

I love my lifeguarding staff(most of the time) 😉  There is a great sense of teamwork within the guards and they make it a fun place to work!  I have met some of my best friends because they worked here!

What transferable skills have you acquired that will help you in the future?

Well, I want to go into campus recreation, so this is the perfect experience for me!  Managing and filling schedules and training guards allows me to really think outside the box. Sometimes things just don’t work the way you want them to. 

What are your favorite Rec activities?

I love doing our GroupX classes!!!  You can’t beat our yoga teachers and class prices!!

When you’re not at the Rec, what are some things you like to do?

I love to travel! This summer I was able to spend 2 weeks in France with my family! It was everything I could have ever dreamed of and more! I had visited my friends who life in the South of France and the food was wonderful! I did not have a bad meal the entire trip!

What are you looking forward to?

I am really looking forward to graduating with my Master’s degree in April. I am ready to be done with school and find a real job!  Also, I am excited to go to NIRSA this year, especially since it’s in Orlando.

What are your plans for the future?

After graduation, I plan to hopefully find a job in the midwest in campus recreation!

Fun Fact: I can correctly identify all the jelly belly flavors just by looking at them!

 

Employee Spotlight: Emma Spak

Emma Spak has been working at the Rec since October 2012.  She has a very active role here at the Rec and definitely manages her time well.  She is one of our lovely Building Managers, as well as, working in Member Services.  She is also the President of the student organization, Recreation Leadership Council (RLC), hosting meetings and promoting professional development and networking events. Her major is English Secondary Education and is a senior this year!!

Why did you want to work at the Rec?

I wanted to work at the Rec because I liked the idea of working in a place where people come to have fun!  Also, my friend from high school worked here and I knew I would enjoy it!

How did you choose your major?

I love to read and have always wanted to be a teacher.  I’ve never changed my mind about wanting to teach.

I love that I have become friends with everyone that works here.  Every single time I come in to the Rec I know someone and am greeted by a friendly face.  While I have developed profoundly as an employee, the friendly environment is always something that I will love.

What transferable skills have you acquired that will help you in the future?

I have improved my communication skills, learned how to network with professional staff, become more of a leader within the department and have also become much more organized.  I attribute much of this growth to working for the Department of Campus Recreation. 

What are your favorite Rec activities?

I am President of RLC, the Marketing Street Team intern and love to take GroupX classes… overall, I enjoy a lot of activities at the Rec.

When you’re not at the Rec, what are some things you like to do?

I like to read, hang out with my best friends and watch Gilmore Girls.

What are you looking forward to?

I am looking forward to going to Europe after I graduate.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to graduate and find a job teaching high school English.  In my spare time, I hope to continue to travel as much as I can. 

Fun Fact: I am obsessed with Peanut Butter and have watched every season of Gilmore Girls more than 10 times.
