Huge Year for Men’s Rugby

Men's Rugby

This past fall semester has been the biggest yet for the Men’s Rugby club team. They dominated on the field with a 4-2 record, which included a season opening win over Ferris State 59-0. Their only losses were to #3 Grand Valley.  Not only was the team very successful on the field, with MVPs DJ Pinneo and David Murray leading the way, but the team found ways to give back to the community too. The team hosted a Movember event, which helps to raise awareness of men’s health issues, that raised over $700 this past fall. This year the Men’s Rugby team has the most active members in school history, and they still keep close ties with the alumni. In August, they hosted their annual alumni game which brought together members of past and present teams.

Their success was noted on Goff Rugby Report, a popular rugby website, for the first time ever! They had stories written about their huge shutout of Ferris State, 59-0, for performances by DJ Pinneo and Florent Sarps in their 66-5 win over Ferris State, and for Kurt Ryan and DJ Pinneo being named two of the top players in the D2 Fall season.

This team is bringing attention to Rugby at OU and is looking forward to a big 2016 season. They are hoping to be ranked in D2, which they haven’t been able to do yet! Captain DJ Pinneo says that they owe a ton of their success to their coach Pete Kohen and their president Mika Halin.
