Rugby Team Pushing for Playoffs

Looking for something to do this weekend? Look no further than OU’s Rugby Club!

The team plays close to campus and is off to a solid 2-1 start this season. The team plays at Auburn Hills Civic Center Park; the same location as the new club football team. It’s a short drive from campus across Squirrel Road, just south of Pioneer Drive.

The team just came off of a last second loss to SVSU on Saturday, ending their two game win streak. Although the loss ended their undefeated streak, senior player Adam Park thinks it might have been a blessing in disguise.

“We have to take one game at a time and I think that’s what hurt us in the loss to Saginaw. Our heads were up in the sky – that loss was needed and it knocked us back to the ground. It’s all about how we get back up and play in the next game against Hillsdale. The team needs to make a statement,” Park said.

With only four games left, playoff talk is in the mix. The playoffs are a big deal for this team and Park is pumped about the opportunity.

“It would be spectacular to make playoffs, seeing as this is my last year on the team and we have been so close in multiple years. To make the playoffs and play would be a first for this team.  I have a big dagger twisted in my heart for the last few years, and I know other guys on the team do too. We want it bad.”

The team used to play on the Upper Fields, but since their move to Civic Center Park, the fan base as suffered.

“Since being over at the Civic Center, it has really hurt our support,” Park said. “We do a lot of tabling , flyers, and post Facebook events, but we’re just not getting the same turnout as when we were playing on the Upper Fields.”

If you’re interested in joining the team next season, they are always trying to recruit new players. Adam says no one is too small or too big to play.

“The saying goes for rugby players: ‘there is a position for any size or shape.’ Once a person starts playing, most stay on, and can never get enough.”

The team’s next game is at 2:00pm on Saturday, October 12th at Hillsdale College. Here’s the remainder of their schedule:

10/12 – 2pm vs @ HILLSDALE
10/19 – 2pm vs FERRIS
10/26 – 11am vs GVSU @ SVSU
11/2 – 1pm vs HOPE
11/9 – Playoffs
