This February, Oakland will be hosting the Region III National Campus Championship Series(NCCS) Basketball Tournament. This will be the fourth time Oakland has hosted the tournament run by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association(NIRSA). Region III consists of universities from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ontario. Intramural and club sports teams from universities all over the region are encouraged to compete and have the opportunity to qualify for the national tournament.

Although OU does not have a club basketball team, there are 62 intramural basketball teams that could participate.

“When it’s local and we’re hosting, it makes it a lot easier for our students to participate and I hope that they take advantage of that,” said Dan Bettmann, the Intramural and Club Sport Coordinator at OU’s Rec Center.

Along with teams, NIRSA will also invite officials and staff members from different universities to officiate and run the games. This is a great opportunity for campus rec employees from the area to develop their skills further, get feedback, and learn more about what it takes to put on a large scale event like this one.

There is still a chance for YOU to get a team together! The entry deadline is February 7th, 2013, and games are held from Friday, February 15th through Sunday, February  17th in our three court gym.  The registration fee for the entire team is $300. The prize for the winning team at this tournament is free registration at the national tournament at North Carolina State University.
