Campus Rec’s Newest Group Ex Class: Krav Maga

Looking for a new way to switch up your workout? Starting October 6th, Campus Rec will be offering Krav Maga every Saturday from 9-10 a.m. Krav Maga is a combat based martial art that shies away from technique and form and focuses on gross motor movements and realistic life threatening scenarios. It was developed over 50 years ago by boxing, wrestling, and gymnastics champion, Imi Sde-Or. It is the official defense system used by the Israeli Defense Forces and other law enforcement agencies around the world.
Marc Gerstenberger is the instructor for the class at Campus Rec and has been a certified Krav Maga instructor for about a year. He has spent the last year teaching Krav at the PSKA Oxford Karate School and has been training in Tang Soo Do for over 3 years.
The class involves hiking knees, throwing elbows and punches, and conditions every muscle in the body. Most of the class is done with pads and partners. According to Marc, there is a special bond created when between partners in Krav Maga, which motivates participants to attend class consistently.
Marc finds being a teacher to be very rewarding. “I like seeing participants overcome what they see as obstacles”, he says. “It’s really cool to see in men and women, [they] gain that confidence, working on that pad, working on that focus and think ‘you know what, I CAN throw a punch. If I get into a bad situation I CAN defend my life.’”
According to Marc, his students leave his class with a fresh perspective of themselves, and after just a few classes they improve substantially. This is a class for people of all ages, all body shapes, and all fitness levels. It is a great way to condition your body quickly and effectively.
Marc’s advice for anyone who is contemplating attending the class is to know your body and know your limits. He encourages everyone to eat a healthy meal about 1 hour prior to the class and bring a lot of water. So, if you’re looking to get an intense workout while also learning how to defend yourself in the most critical situations, it is highly recommended that you attend Krav Maga.
